Lying at latitude 51 42' N and longitude 08 31' W (Admiralty Charts 2053, 1765 / Imray C56 / Irish OS 87) Kinsale is a traditional commercial port with a long history. It is now also a popular pleasure port, particularly for sailing yachts. It has a splendid, virtually land locked natural harbour on the estuary of the river Bandon. Kinsale lies 11 nautical miles SW of Cork harbour entrance and about 5 nautical miles NNE of the Old Head of Kinsale. The inner and outer harbours cover approximately 2 square miles, providing good shelter and anchorage. The town of Kinsale, with a population of about 2000, has built up around the harbour.
As a commercial port, Kinsale caters for approximately 100 vessels per year. The majority of this shipping is the importation of bulk animal feeds. Kinsale also has a thriving fishing fleet.
